Article by Rubix

Compiling a CV allows you to summarise your academic achievements, abilities and relevant work experience, allowing you to effectively showcase your skills to potential employers.

A standard CV in the UK should be no longer than two sides of A4. Make sure your document is neat and free from anything unnecessary that might divert attention from the important content.

Include all necessary components

  • Contact info – Start your CV with your essential details, such as your name, location, email address, and phone number. This should be at the top of the page. If you have a professional networking profile or online portfolio, include the link in your contact information.
  • Personal statement  – It is crucial to get your personal statement right as it is the first thing employers see when they open your CV. To do this, focus on highlighting who you are, what you can offer and your career goals. Refer to the job description to identify the specific skills the employer is seeking. Additionally, make your personal statement unique by emphasising your most impressive relevant skills and abilities.
  • Work experience – Begin by listing your work experience in reverse date order, ensuring that each entry is directly related to the position you are seeking. Include your job title, the name of the company, how long you worked there and key responsibilities.
  • Skills – The skills section in your CV is crucial as it allows you to showcase specialised knowledge and skills that are not mentioned elsewhere. This section can include technical skills like languages and IT, as well as skills such as leadership or adaptability.  It is important to ensure that your skills align with the skills mentioned in the job description.
  • Education – If you are established in your career, your education should be placed at the end of your CV as your work experience is more important. Include the name of where you studied and degree earned. Don’t forget to add any additional courses or certifications you have completed.

Professional Development

Emphasise your personal growth. Demonstrate how you have evolved and achieved success in your previous roles. This will indicate to the recruiter/employer that you have gained valuable experience from your past positions and are dedicated to learning and enhancing your abilities.

Keywords

Employers frequently use keywords to find candidates. These keywords are usually related to the job title, requirements, and duties. To make sure you meet all the criteria, always review the job description and company website for specific words and phrases the employer is seeking. This can include using industry-specific terminology and highlighting your qualifications.

Customise your CV

Tailor your CV to the job description by highlighting how your achievements align with the requirements of the role. Show that you understand what the position entails, and why you are the ideal candidate for it.

Crafting a great CV may take a while, but it’s your chance to highlight your achievements and abilities to potential employers. The more you analyse the job requirements and the field, the more prepared you’ll be to make your CV shine!
